Herbert von Karajan, Music Director of the Berlin Philharmonic from 1956 until his death in 1989, is one of the pre-eminent musical figures of the century. He conducted some of the most technically precise, luxurious sounding recordings in all of classical music. The Karajan Legacy film series documents many of these definitive performances, were directed by Karajan, and are among his only digital recordings. This series makes its debut on DVD, bringing the superb artistry of this man to fuller expression than ever before. These deluxe releases feature interactive menus and beautiful digital sound, with audio postproduction by Grammy-winning producer Steven Epstein.

This 1983 recording of Karajan with the Berlin Philharmonic features the Ninth Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven. This performance of the "Choral" Symphony, Op.125, features the final chorus from Schiller's "Ode to Joy" performed by soprano Lella Cuberli, alto Helga Müller Molinari, tenor Vinson Cole and baritone Franz Grundheber.
