Claudio Scimone is the Founder and Director of the world famous ensemble "I Solisti Veneti". He is also honorary conductor of the Gulbelkian Orchestra in Lisbon. After studying conducting with Dimitri Mitropolous and Franco Ferrara, Maestro Scimone earned international renown conducting Operas in such opera houses as Covent Garden in London, Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Houston Grand Opera, Zurich Opernhaus, Verona's Arena, La Fenice in Venice. Mostly Mozart Festival (at the Lincoln Center) in New York, Terme di Caracalla for the Roma State Opera, and several others. He has also conducted major Symphony Orchestras as the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, the Royal Philarmonic, the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre Philarmonique of the French Radio, the Symphonies of Montreal, Ottawa, Houston, Dallas, Sidney, Melbourne, Tokyo, the Bamberger Symphoniker, the Prague Chamber Orchestra, just to mention a few. In 1996 he had an enormous succes conducting for the Arena of Verona (the Roman Theatre that has more than 16.000 places) the "Barber of Seville" by Rossini and "Les Danaides" of Salieri. He has been a frequent guest in all the major world's Festivals such as Salzburg Festival (every year since 1975 to 1998), Maggio Fiorentino, Aspen Musical Festival, the Festivals of Venice, Besançon, Bordeaux, London City, Helsinki, Festival du Marais in Paris, Mai de Versailles, Nymphenburg and many, many others. A native of Padua, Claudio Scimone is an internationally recognized musicologist and the author of "Segno, Significato, Interpretazione". His revisions and first modern editions of Giuseppe Tartini's Violin Concertos and Sonatas have sparked a revival of interest in this nearly forgotten composer and philosopher. Equally notable is his revision of Vivaldi's theatrical works such as "Orlando Furioso", which he directed in its world premiere recording in 1977 with Marilyn Horne and Victoira de Los Angeles an in the two years later he led its first modern public performance, at the Teatro Filarmonico in Verona. He has also collaborated closely with the Rossini Foundation of Pesaro in preparing the critical edition of "Maometto II". He conducted in world premiere several first performances or first recordings of Rossini operas such as "Maometto II", "Ermione", "Zelmira", "Mosè in Egitto", "Armida", "Edipo a Colono". These operas have been recorded by him for multinational companies such as Philips, Erato-WEA, Europa-Frequenz. For the most well known record companies Scimone has recorded over 150 titles of records with many world premiere recordings, among which are four Great Symphonies of Muzio Clementi with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London; unpublished works of Giacomo Puccini, Saverio Mercadante and Arrigo Boito, Italian Ouvertures by Gaetano Donizetti, Gaspare Spontini and Amilcare Ponchielli, the total series of concertos of Albinoni, more than 250 works of Antonio Vivaldi, including the integral version of the "Opus" of Vivaldi published during the life of the Composer. Among the many awards that he has received for his musical achievements are the Grand Prix du Disque de l'Academie Charles Cros in Paris (several times, starting in 1969 with Rossini String Sonatas), the Grand prix de l'Academie du Disque Lyrique, the Grammy Award in Los Angeles (for Rossini's "L'Italiana in Algeri" with "I Solisti Veneti", Marylyn Horne, Samuel Ramey, Kathleen Battle, ecc.), the Gold Medal of the President of the Italian Republic, the Prix Mondial du Disque de Montreux (previously only given to Stokowsky, Rubinstein, Böhm, Solti and Bernstein), the Diapason d'Or, the "Caecilia" award of the Union de la Presse Musicale Belge and the Premio della Critica Discografica Italiana. Many well known producers have based on Claudio Scimone important TV productions such as Fraçois Reichenbach "Vivaldi peintre de la Musique", Eric Lippmann's "Vivaldi et Venise", Montes Baquer TV productions of Vivaldi "L'Estro Armonico" in the Stupinigi Royal Palace in Turin and "Corelli and the Rome of the Popes" in the Basilica of San Pietro in Rome. The famous italian producer Ermanno Olmi has based on "I Solisti Veneti" a TV film with Haydn's "Last Seven Words" in the Giotto Chapel in Padova. Many modern composers have written works especially dedicated to Claudio Scimone or to his group, like Sylvano Bussotti, Franco Donatoni, Riccardo Malipiero, Marius Constant, Christobal Halffter and several others. |
