AboutLondon-born composer Edward Shearmur is recognised for his imaginative and innovative scoring for such films as The Wings of the Dove and The Cement Garden. He collaborated with Sony Classical most recently for the release of his soundtrack for the film Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her (SK 89036), which stars Glenn Close, Holly Hunter, Cameron Diaz and Calista Flockhart and will be released this year. Shearmur also collaborated with the label for the soundtrack of The Governess (SK 60685). Set in Los Angeles' San Fernando valley, Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her tells the stories of a group of women sorting through their lives. The film is directed by Rodrigo Garcia, making his debut. Shearmur's gentle, yearning soundtrack features the artistry of Terence Blanchard on trumpet, Eileen Ivers on fiddle and Grover Washington, Jr., on saxophone. A music scholar at Eton College and a one-time student at the Royal College of Music, Shearmur began his apprenticeship in film scoring with the award-winning composer Michael Kamen in 1984, playing keyboards on Kamen's score for the James Bond film License to Kill and later helping to orchestrate the music for such films as Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. Shearmur's debut as a film composer came in 1991 with his highly acclaimed score for The Cement Garden. Though classically trained (he began singing in the choir of London's Westminster Abbey at the age of 7), Edward Shearmur has been active in the realms of pop and rock, working with the likes of Annie Lennox, Pink Floyd, Marianne Faithful, Echo and the Bunnymen, Eric Clapton and Bryan Adams, both on-stage and in the recording studio.
