At Lyric Opera of Chicago, Eaglen’s portrayal of the goddess/heroine of Wagner’s Ring cycle was acclaimed as "the finest Brunnhilde alive today" (Opera). The singer received still more rave reviews for her subsequent performances as Brunnhilde in complete Ring Cycles in Chicago, with Riccardo Muti at La Scala in Milan, at the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera and the Vienna Staatsoper. The bel canto tragedy Norma is also a specialty of Eaglen's, and her triumphant performances in the formidable title role led London's Sunday Times to christen her "the Norma of the 1990s." Her unique success in these contrasting roles was echoed in the first solo recording of her exclusive relationship with Sony Classical, a critically acclaimed disc of Bellini and Wagner scenes and arias (SK 62032). On her latest release from Sony Classical, Eaglen returns to the Italian repertoire for a program of dramatic arias from such operas as Turandot, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, Adriana Lecouvreur, La Gioconda, Mefistofele and more, with Carlo Rizzi conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. She can also be heard on Sony Classical's best-selling soundtrack recording from the film version of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Other recordings for the label include a disc of Mozart and Richard Strauss arias (SK 60042) a disc of orchestral song cycles, including Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs, Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder and Berg’s Seven Early Songs (SK 61720). Previous portrayals of Brunnhilde include those for Opera Pacific and Scottish Opera. Other memorable operatic performances include her debut as Isolde in Tristan und Isolde in Seattle, followed by repeat triumphs in the role at the Met in New York and the Lyric Opera of Chicago; her debut as La Gioconda for the Lyric Opera of Chicago last season; her debut at the Metropolitan Opera, New York as Donna Anna in Don Giovanni - previously performed for Vienna State Opera and in Los Angeles, Munich and Bologna; title role Turandot at the Met with Pavarotti, in Vienna, Madrid, Seattle, Bologna and at the Bastille, Paris; Amelia Un Ballo in Maschera at the Bastille and in Bologna; title role Tosca for the Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, in concert with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and for English National Opera; and title role Ariadne auf Naxos for English National Opera. Equally at home on the concert platform her recent engagements include Verdi's Requiem with Simon Rattle and the CBSO and with Danielle Gatti and the orchestra of St. Cecilia in Rome; Mahler's Eighth Symphony with Klaus Tennstedt available on video and to open the 1994 Edinburgh Festival with Donald Runnicles; Götterdämmerung Act 3 with Bernard Haitink and the Boston Symphony Orchestra; Nabucco in Ravenna with Muti; Gurrelieder with Claudio Abbado at the Salzburg and Edinburgh Festivals; Norma in concert at the Tivoli Festival Copenhagen and at Carnegie Hall; Salome final scene with Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic; Strauss Four Last Songs with Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; Walküre and Siegfried with Conlon in Cologne; and Die Walküre Act 3 at the Hollywood Bowl. Additional engagements include performances of Berg's Seven Early Songs, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and the concert aria “Ah Perfido ”; Schöenberg's Gurrelieder; and Oberon.. Future appearances on the concert platform will include Verdi's Requiem with Daniel Barenboim in Berlin; and concerts in Cleveland, Minnesota, Vancouver, Chicago, London, Seattle and Tel Aviv. Miss Eaglen will appear in recital in the UK and USA during 2001 and 2002. Future plans include complete Ring cycles for the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago and Seattle Opera; Tristan und Isolde in Puerto Rico and Barcelona; the title role Turandot for the Metropolitan Opera; and a new production of La Vestale for the English National Opera. |
