The West, a 12-hour documentary series directed by Stephen Ives and executive produced by Ken Burns, had its debut September 22, 1997 on PBS stations nationwide, and Sony Classical released the original television soundtrack recording on September 3, 1997. The series' original score, by Matthias Gohl, features performances by violinist Jay Ungar and guitarist Molly Mason, who appeared on the soundtrack of The Civil War, the award-winning documentary series by Ken Burns. Joining Gohl, Ungar and Mason are more than 20 diverse artists -- among them Black Elk Voices, Nana Vasconcelos and Seamus Eagan -- who recreate the vocal and instrumental music of the West, from Native American sounds to the hymns, songs and dances of the settlers, cowboys, soldiers and immigrants who led the westward expansion of the United States. In addition to original music, the score includes such Western classics as "Colorado Trail", "Sweet Nebraska Land", "The Old Chisolm Trail", "Git Along, Little Dogies", "Across the Wide Missouri", "Amazing Grace" and "The Wabash Cannonball". A multifaceted view of the American West unfolds in this eight-part series, including everything from the centuries of history of Native Americans to the rarely examined roles of African Americans and Chinese immigrants in the settling of the West. Ives spent almost five years assembling the material, shooting 72 interviews with historians, Native Americans and other Western figures and more than 250 hours of original footage to capture the visual power of the West. Peter Coyote is the series' narrator, and 56 celebrated actors deliver the personal historical accounts that make up the narrative, including Adam Arkin, Matthew Broderick, Keith Carradine, Blythe Danner, Ossie Davis, Julie Harris, Sir Derek Jacobi, John Lithgow, Russell Means, Jason Robards, Gary Sinise, Jimmy Smits and B.D. Wong.
