About
Official Site: http://www.oslmusic.org/homeThe Orchestra of St. Luke's, America's foremost and most versatile chamber orchestra, is acclaimed for its mastery of a diverse repertoire spanning the Baroque to the contemporary. First organized at the Caramoor International Music Festival in the summer of 1979, the Orchestra evolved from the St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble, which was established in 1974 with Ensemble members forming the Orchestra's artistic core as principal players. Donald Runnicles is the Principal Conductor, succeeding Sir Charles Mackerras, Music Director from 1998 to 2001, and Sir Roger Norrington, who held that post from 1990 to 1994. Each season, Carnegie Hall presents the Orchestra of St. Luke's in a multi-concert subscription series. In addition, the Orchestra of St. Luke's is engaged throughout the year in a variety of artistic collaborations, special projects, and recordings. These have included the Carnegie Hall Choral Workshops, Family Concerts, a special presentation of Duke Ellington's music with Sir Simon Rattle, and an all-star performance of Richard Rodgers' Carousel with Audra McDonald and Hugh Jackman. In October 2001, the office of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani invited the Orchestra, Christoph Eschenbach and Renee Fleming to participate in the official Family Memorial Service at Ground Zero for the victims of 9/11. The Orchestra conducts residency activities at universities and performing arts centers in the New York area, and each summer returns to perform in residence at Caramoor. St. Luke's has premiered over 100 orchestral and chamber works by such composers as John Adams, Joan Tower, Anthony Davis, Nicholaas Maw, Andre Previn, George Tsontakis and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, and has amassed a discography of over 70 recordings, including three Grammy Award-winning releases: John Adam's Nixon in China and Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with Dawn Upshaw for Nonesuch, and Bel Canto with Renee Fleming for Decca. In 2003 St. Luke's launched its own label, St. Luke's Collection with two critically-acclaimed releases: Mozart's Symphonies 39 & 41 "Jupiter" and Bach's Brandenburg Concertos with the St. Luke's Chamber Ensemble. Members of the Orchestra also participate in St. Luke's acclaimed Arts Education Program, integrating comprehensive in-school workshops with free music and dance performances for over 20,000 New York City school children annually. |
